Doing it differently
We are so caught up with our busy schedule that we totally forget to appreciate what we have. I find myself complaining when something goes wrong but then I forget to feel grateful when I can sleep inside my warm duvet in -3 degrees. One day I sat down and tried to understand what was bothering me so much. That’s when I realised I never really felt blessed to be living the life I live. There is so much agony in the world I have no idea about, and I’m so lucky to have this life. I must appreciate and feel grateful for what I have. Simple things in life bring happiness and to realise that, you just have to focus on yourself for once and understand life is not that bad. Change is constant and whatever is happening right now will pass. We need to restore faith and be grateful for the wonderful life we are living.
I developed this habit since last year when I picked up a random planner from Asda because it was cute. Right now, when I am writing this I have my 2018 planner right by my side. I don’t know what I will do without one. Practically my life will fall apart. Planning things in advance make things so much easier for me and I don’t have to worry about forgetting anything. I carry it almost everywhere as it comes really handy and when I check things off my list, it feels really good. It is also a very good skill to have as you adhere to your routine and not binging on Netflix when you are supposed to be working on your essay.
3. Turning off notifications
I think this is the best thing I have ever done to myself. No matter which application it is, I keep my notifications off. Yes, I do miss some important messages but I am currently able to mitigate that quite efficiently. To be honest, notifications were quite distracting and I kept on checking my phone as soon as I was notified. I was spending way too much of time on my phone than I should have. If you know me, you would know that I stay alone so I have to get everything sorted on my own. So, sticking to my phone doesn’t really help. Now, I have way more control regarding when to check my social media handles and I do get some good night’s sleep.
4. Skin care first
I absolutely love makeup! It makes me feel so happy when I get a new eye shadow palette. However, I do take greater care of my skin now and this is the best thing you can do to yourself. If you have a flawless base, you will need less makeup and it will look good too. You do not necessarily have to buy expensive products, try out home remedies, find a skincare routine that works for you, drink water and get some sleep.
5. Declutter and donate
I have always seen my mom donating our clothes to the less fortunate. She taught us to help the needy. As I have to move out every year, I de-clutter my stuff and donate, which I do not need to someone who would appreciate it. It is not only about clothes, I de-clutter my makeup too and give it to my cousins if they want it. I think it clears out my space and it is a great way to start afresh.
6. Be productive
I have to push myself to get out my cozy room and create some content. Trust me, everyone you see who is doing well in their lives is because they work for it. They go out of their comfort zone and sort their lives out. It does not come easy to anyone, if you have a dream you have to work hard to make it come true. Literally, every time I go out I think to myself that I should do this more. I am relatively doing better than before, and I try to make the best out of each opportunity. If you ever feel you are having a creative block then take some time out and go for a walk, listen to some music. Do whatever makes you happy and you will be fine.
7. Make time for loved ones
Yes! Yes! We all are busy but it never hurts to take some time out and spend it with your loved ones. Catching up with your friends whom you haven’t seen for ages is like a fresh burst of energy. It also brings you closer to the other person and makes your bond stronger. You do not necessarily have to meet for five hours, just go for a cup of coffee and then head back to your college or office or home. We are so engrossed in our own lives that we forget how much relationships mean to us. Happiness is always better when shared with others.
Who else is guilty of paying for gym membership and never end up going there? My name will be on the top of the list. However, this year I also made my sister join the gym with me. So that even if I don’t feel like going there, I have to because she will drag me along. It really works, a workout buddy is a good idea if you trying to get fit. But, you also need to be motivated on your own to do this. At times, she can’t make it but I carry on with my own routine because that’s good for my health. Dieting and cutting sugar works but then you have to take responsibility of your body and think of long term results. If you cannot make it to the gym then do yoga at home, there are so many videos on YouTube you can follow like ‘Yoga with Adriene’ .
9. Unsubscribe from mailing list
Every morning I used to wake up and checked my emails, there used to be dozen from different e-retailers. I am guilty of spending way too much money on shopping because they always come up with a special discount codes for me. So, I decided to unsubscribe from the mailing lists of all the retailers I used to receive emails from. My mailbox is a happy place now and I am certainly able to save some money. If you want to do the same then use www.unroll.me, this is a great website for unsubscribing and keeping your mailbox junk free.
10. Save money
I want to be in control of my finances so I am trying hard to figure out how to save some money. As a student I go out often and end up spending more than needed, which is really not good. I do work for my university and that adds up to my pocket money. This gives me freedom to spend it the way I want but savings is my top priority now. There is no particular reason for that but I believe it is a good habit to develope. It will always help me out in the long run; also saving in piggy banks is a good idea if you are just starting out.
